Progress Report (of sorts)

So here’s what I’m up to. In a week or two I’ll be done on the rough draft of The Black Lung Captain, after which I’ll spend a bit of time lying down with cold towels over my wrists and forehead, then I’ll get up and edit it into a proper first draft and give it to my editor sometime in the middle of November. Right on schedule, ’cause I’m a good little author.

After that, I’m not sure what’s next up. Due to publishing deadlines I wrote Malice, Retribution Falls, Havoc and The Black Lung Captain back to back without a break, so I’ve been neglecting my scripts. Maybe I’ll do a bit of screenplay work for a bit. Maybe something with zombies… wait, no. Anyway, what I will do is take a little break while I sort it out. Normally this would be the point when I sling on a backpack and go somewhere in the world I haven’t been, but what with Christmas coming up and plane fares being astronomical that time of year, I’ll probably put it off till early next year. So I’ll get bored after three days and go back to work. I don’t do inactivity well…

Meantime, Malice has just been released in the US. Everyone who hasn’t tasted that little slice of YA fantasy-horror-with-a-graphic-novel-twist, er, go taste it!

Malice = tasted. And very much enjoyed. I was impatient enough to just order it online, rather than wait for it’s release here. And I’m very excited for you to write a screenplay, if you choose to do so, because it would be another great movie to go see! :)

  2. Summer says:

    It wasn’t out before? 0.0
Well, time to go order it!

    Thanks.
    Nathan

  5. @ Isaac – Sorry for the delay, been consumed with finishing off The Black Lung Captain. I’ll get in touch in the next couple of days.

@ Nathan – Glad you liked Storm Thief. There isn’t a sequel, I’m afraid, but if you liked that one I hope you’ll like Malice. And that one does have a sequel ;)

  7. Ziggy Harris says:

Hi Chris, I’m 10 years old and I loved the book Malice so much that I was stubborn enough to get into a fight with my mum about going to sleep when I didn’t want to because I wanted to keep reading Malice.I read the whole book in one go so only had 3 hours sleep. My mum was not impressed. I am doing Malice for my book review assignment this term. I’m desperate for the next book in the series, Havoc, to come out. Can you please tell me when it’s coming out in Australia because that’s where I live.Thank you for such great books.Ziggy.

  8. Jace Terry says:

I really liked your book Malice, but I have two questions.First, I have the copy with the rsiing man on front and no “You can”t escape,”so my guy has a couple of spots where it has turned white but I have only had it for three days, so is that bad weird or supposed to happen.Plus I felled the white spots, and they felt like the rest of the bumpy surface.Second, when is Havoc coming out, but I heard how tire you are so dont rush, but I was curious.Thank you in advance

  9. @ Ziggy – Good work! I’m pretty sure Havoc comes out in Australia around the same time as the UK, which is April, I think.

@ Jace – Yeah, the colouring does wear off on the cover eventually if it gets rubbed. It’s just Tall Jake disappearing off the cover of the book on his way to come get you ;)

You don’t say where you’re from, but I’m guessing the States since you only just got Malice. Havoc should come out next October in the US, I believe.

  24. Graham says:

Hi. I really liked Malice, I finished it in to days. First day, I read 314 pages, next day, I read the rest. I really liked that one of the characters was named Graham. I know that you said Havoc will be out in October, but you mean 2010, right? Great job on Malice, looking forward to Havoc.

  25. Hi Graham. Yes, I meant October 2010.

@ Eric – not sure about the Havoc cover, I haven’t seen it myself yet.

  31. Chinda says:

Hi, I’m Chinda. I read Malice in 3 days. I don’t really like reading much, but it was probably the first book I really love a lot and the fastest I ever read a chapter book. It’s the best book ever. I really really cant wait for Havoc to come out. I thought it was going to come out on Feb 2009 but it’s not. :( Anyway can’t wait to read Havoc. I don’t know if theres a movie on it, but there should be one it would be really cool. From Cali, US

  32. Dylan says:

I’ve started to read malice and so far it is amazing after I finish I’m going to read some of your other books. Any suggestions :)

  33. Alyssa says:

Well I read Malice these past days and like many others said, I just couldn’t put it down! I love some of the twists in it, I don’t think there was a time I didn’t get eager about what would happen next.
Is Havoc going to be released in Canada on the same month as US? If not, do you have an idea when?

Haha, I’m so impatient when it comes to books, especially their sequels. :)

  34. Thanks for all your comments!

@ Matt: Bigger, better, faster, nastier. You’re just gonna have to wait and see, I’m afraid :D

@ Jake & Alyssa: As far as I know, Canada automatically gets the same release dates as the UK (and Australia) which is April 2010 I think. It’s all about the Commonwealth, y’know. Gawd save the Queen!!! ;)

@ Dylan: depending if you can lay your hands on it, I’d say Retribution Falls. Otherwise, The Haunting Of Alaizabel Cray should be easy to find in the US, if that’s where you live.

  35. eric fox says:

  41. Kat Rossa says:

Few months ago, my 14 year old son (who doesn’t usually like to read) was swept away by your books. I was curious what it was he was reading and started following in his tracks. Now we pretty much read everything you have written so far and we can’t wait for Havoc to come out – time is not passing fast enough – April is not soon enough.

I live in NYC and usually read your books while traveling to work by subway and for those few minutes every single day I get lost in a different world – a nice escape before I have to get off at Grand Central Station and say hello to the real world.

Last book I just finished reading was the FADE and I think it was one of my favorite ones! Are you thinking about the sequel to that one? I am curious!

  42. Lauren says:

OMG!!! you are a great wrighter and i was wondering… do you think that you will make “Malice” into a movie it would be awesome!!!! and poor luke :’( i cant wait to read “Havoc” ( im in canada) haha EH!! lolz

  43. garret says:

you are awesome im still reading malice and i want havoc to come out soon after im done so you should hurry or make a malice movie

  44. Kyle says:

I love Malice. I can’t wait till Havoc comes out. I love your books.
Also, has a Malice movie been announced or are they just the hopes of many fans?

  45. @ Kat – Thanks! No sequel to The Fade, I’m afraid. I can’t think what else I could put poor Orna through, to be honest ;)

Malice is with a production company who are developing it as a movie (getting scriptwriters and directors on board etc) but I know from experience that it’s an excruciatingly slow and fraught process so don’t hold your breath. Even if everything went super fast it would still take a couple of years, and that’s if it gets made at all. Sorry :(

  46. gwen says:

    hey chris

i’m a huge fan. i’ve read most of your books and i love ur style. I was wondering if you’d know if there would be any auditions for Malice like in a couple of monthes or something. I would just love to be apart of that movie it would be an honor.

    Gwen ^.^

  47. zander says:

Hi chris my name is zander.LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUVED your book Malice(the best book ever).I just wanted to now when havoc comes out in south africa.Cant wait for havoc!!!!!! :)

  48. @ Gwen – to be honest, if the movie ever gets made then any auditions would be a lot further away than a couple of months. More like a couple of years. If there should happen to be open auditions, I’ll post it up here…

@ Zander – I honestly don’t know when Havoc will come out in South Africa. It’s fairly safe to assume that it will come out a year after Malice came out, though.

  49. Kat Rossa says:

Just finished reading the Catchman. Was it one of your first books? Quick read… not as visually stimulating as all other books, but what it had in common with the rest – I couldn’t put it down and we were joint at the hip for 2 days. Are you still crushing on Drew B? :) Cute!

“Visual” stimulation is what I love best about the worlds you create. Sometimes, it takes me a day or 2 of headaches to get through the first chapter or 2 (not in a bad way) until I can ‘look around’ and find myself in the story… and fit in. The places you paint in my mind are so out of this world, that it takes me a while to take it all in. Do I make sense? And once I am there… living it… it is extraordinary and magical… Isn’t it amazing how our minds work?

I love the way you describe places… vocabulary you use. I must be honest – descriptions are not usually my favorite part of the book, since I belong to the inpatient people, but there is something about the way you put words and sentences together that I never skim through them and I read it all thoroughly not to miss a thing.

    Keep it up!

  50. Kat Rossa says:

BTW. I realized I wrote in my previous post that we read all you have written so far, but I was wrong – unintentionally. We read all we could find on the shelves @ local Barnes and Nobles. Since then, we found few more titles we weren’t familiar with on amazon.com and they’re arriving slowly – mostly from Europe. The Catchman was one of them. There is few more on the way – like Endgame for example… you know what it means… you will definitely see more of my posts here… lol :P
